How often should you really change oil?
“Every 5,000 km” is a common line. Real intervals move with how you drive. Three marks we use when people ask.
1. Driving style beats distance
Highway miles and short, cold, stop-start trips age oil differently. If the engine rarely reaches full temperature, change a bit sooner than the sticker.
2. Stick to the spec on the car
Viscosity and spec in the handbook come first. Changing grade can affect protection and fuel use. If you are unsure, keep the factory spec.
3. Colour and smell
The dipstick is a rough check. Very dark oil or a burnt smell is a reason to look sooner, even if the km count is low.
